Patent Scoring
  ipCG Home Page

For many, portfolio mining means finding valuable, hidden patents from a portfolio, and patent scoring means an electronic tool, report, or algorithm used to find these patents.

For ipCG and our clients, patent scoring means much more. We believe that patent scoring involves using known metrics or creating new metrics that, when used in unique and various combinations with one another, can resolve unique business issues for our clients.

Here is a list of some of the business questions we have tackled, by using patent scoring:

  • Out-licensing (Core and Non-Core Markets): Do we have patented products or technologies in our portfolio that would be of particular interest to direct competitors, small companies looking to commercialize new technology, outside non-core markets, and the like?
  • Breakthrough Technology: Do we or do our direct competitors have patents that could provide an early indication of breakthrough products or technologies in our industry?
  • In-licensing: Are there valuable, patented products or technologies that we should consider in-licensing?
  • Abandonment: Do we have patents in our portfolio that do not protect our core business, and how much money could we save by abandoning them?
  • Competitive Intelligence: We believe that there are there discernable trends that show that others are commercializing our technology; how could we identify and use this on a going-forward basis?
  • Due Diligence: How does the patent portfolio of our new business investment compare with that of others in the industry?
  • Education: How can we use an understanding of patent scoring and metrics inside our organization?

Here is a list of those who benefited from patent scoring:

  • Licensing Managers
  • General Counsels
  • IP Strategists
  • Venture Capitalists
  • Directors of Business Development
