AI can now detect heart disease from routine mammograms, and the patent landscape behind cross-diagnostic inference is almost completely empty.
Researchers at Emory University trained a deep learning model to spot cardiovascular risk markers in standard breast mammograms. Women with severe breast arterial calcification faced two to three times the risk of serious cardiac events. With 40 million mammograms performed annually in the U.S., a single screening could flag heart disease without ordering a separate scan. CureMetrix already holds a granted patent on this approach (EP3985557B1).
But the broader IP landscape has not caught up. Less than 1% of AI medical imaging patents cover cross-diagnostic inference, where an algorithm trained on one imaging modality surfaces signals for an unrelated condition. Philips, Siemens Healthineers, and GE Healthcare hold the majority of single-disease detection filings.
The cross-diagnostic category is wide open, and AI-native startups are the ones filing first.
