Amplifon paid €2.3B for GN’s hearing business, and the hearing aid patents are what build the moat. The next white space: AI at the edge of the device.

When a hearing aid retailer spends €2.3 billion to acquire a manufacturer, the patent portfolio is what turns a distribution deal into a competitive moat.
Amplifon agreed on March 16 to buy GN’s hearing business for €2.3 billion, gaining the ReSound and Beltone brands along with patents covering signal processing, Bluetooth audio streaming, and adaptive noise cancellation. Amplifon had no comparable patent position of its own. Apple and Bose have both entered the hearing aid market with FDA-cleared products, but the filing data shows incumbents hold patent positions an order of magnitude larger, covering the core acoustic engineering that OTC entrants need to compete on performance, not just price.
In the mid-2000s, Johnson & Johnson filed over a dozen patent families targeting the hearing aid value chain rather than the device itself: personalized tuning, sound simulation, at-home diagnostics, and user training systems. I worked on several of those filings. What struck me then was how open the value chain IP was, and I believe it still is. The next white space is agentic AI across the hearing aid value chain and AI at the edge of the device itself. I would expect ReSound and Beltone to build an IP moat around these capabilities now. Having worked with Bose as well, I would bet on them playing here too. Bose built its reputation on first-principles sound engineering, and that foundation positions them well to lead on AI-driven acoustics.
This acquisition shows what a patent moat is worth. The next one will be built around AI at the edge of the hearing aid and agentic AI across the value chain.

The companies that file first will own that position.
