The quantum money found the quiet lanes

In June, when French startup Quobly raised 115 million euros to build quantum processors from silicon spin qubits, I mapped the quantum computing patent landscape and made one observation: silicon spin was one of the lea.

In June, when French startup Quobly raised 115 million euros to build quantum processors from silicon spin qubits, I mapped the quantum computing patent landscape and made one observation: silicon spin was one of the least-patented lanes in the entire field, and for a new entrant, an under-built patent lane is a feature, not a bug.

Quobly was not the only check written into a quiet lane this year. Quantum Motion closed a $160 million Series C for silicon spin qubits in May, and Photonic raised $200 million at a $2 billion valuation for photonic qubits the same month. The momentum has carried into this quarter: Quantinuum listed on Nasdaq in June at a valuation near $14 billion, EuroHPC opened 119 million euros in quantum calls on August 13, and Shanghai’s TuringQ filed for an A-share listing on August 5, joining Origin Quantum and QBoson in the queue of Chinese quantum IPO candidates.

So I re-ran the entire landscape, same queries, to see what actually changed in one quarter. The short answer: the field added almost a thousand patent families in nine weeks, the three smallest technology lanes are now the three fastest growing, and the real frontier quietly moved from building qubits to correcting them.

A thousand new families in one quarter

The full quantum computing set now stands at 8,362 extended patent families filed since 2015, up from 7,389 when I pulled the same query on June 22. That is 973 new families in about nine weeks, roughly 13% portfolio growth in a single quarter, in a field that had already grown about 33x over the past decade.

For calibration: entire mature technology categories add less than that in a year. Quantum patent filing is not slowing down as the hype cycles wobble. It is compounding.

The smallest lanes are growing fastest

Split the field by how the qubit is physically built, and the June-to-August deltas tell a story the funding headlines confirm:

Superconducting: 1,660 to 1,961 families, up 18%

Trapped ion: 599 to 703, up 17%

Photonic: 421 to 538, up 28%

Silicon spin: 198 to 244, up 23%

Neutral atom: 115 to 178, up 55%

The ordering has not changed. Superconducting is still the crowded street, nearly three times the size of the next lane, paved for a decade by IBM and Google. But look at the growth rates: the three smallest lanes (photonic, silicon spin, neutral atom) are the three fastest growing. Neutral atom, the smallest lane in the whole field, grew 55% in one quarter.

That is what it looks like when a field notices its own white space. In June the quiet lanes were where positioning was still cheap. They are getting less quiet by the month, and this year’s checks followed the same map: Photonic’s $200 million went to the photonic lane, Quantum Motion’s $160 million and Quobly’s 115 million euros to silicon spin, exactly the under-built streets.

The frontier moved from qubits to error correction

Here is the slice I did not chart in June and should have. Quantum error correction and fault tolerance, the technology of keeping fragile qubits honest long enough to compute, now counts 881 patent families, about one in ten of the entire field.

The shape of that curve is the story: 20 publications in 2015, 690 in 2025, and 532 already in 2026 with four months of publications still to come. It is tracking to beat 2025 and set a record.

This matches where the science went. The industry benchmark stopped being “how many physical qubits do you have” and became “how many logical qubits can you keep alive.” A UCLA-led consortium won an NSF grant this month specifically to build a 60-logical-qubit fault-tolerant machine. The patent data says the whole field made that turn two years ago and is accelerating into it.

If you want to know where the next generation of foundational quantum IP is being written, it is here, in the correction layer, not the qubit layer.

Two billion dollars, eighteen patent families

Now the part that should give every quantum investor a moment of pause.

Photonic is valued at $2 billion and holds 18 patent families inside the core quantum landscape. Quantum Motion, fresh off $160 million, holds 15. PsiQuantum, one of the most funded quantum companies on earth, shows 43. Meanwhile IBM holds 681 families in the same set, Origin Quantum 662, and the incumbent leaderboard (IBM, Google, Microsoft, Intel) keeps filing every week.

One honest technical caveat, because it changes how you read those numbers. This landscape is anchored to quantum computing patent classifications, and photonic companies file a lot of their real IP as optics: waveguides, lithium niobate devices, photonic integrated circuits. TuringQ holds 95 families overall, but only 12 classify into the core quantum set. PsiQuantum shows the same pattern. A classification-anchored landscape structurally undercounts photonic players, which means a diligence read on a photonics-based quantum company has to look one shelf over in the patent library, or it will miss most of the estate.

That caveat cuts both ways. It softens the “thin portfolio” read on photonic startups, and it sharpens the diligence question: if the defensible IP is filed as optics, how much of it is quantum-specific at all, and how much would read equally well on classical photonics? Anyone writing a nine-figure check into this field should want that answer patent by patent, from the claims, not from a family count. Filing volume is not claim strength, and nothing here speaks to freedom to operate; those are questions for counsel with the actual documents open.

The US-China gap is widening, quietly

One more move since June: US quantum publications grew from 6,667 to 7,612, China from 5,675 to 6,358. The US lead widened from under a thousand publications to over 1,250 in nine weeks. With TuringQ heading for a Shanghai listing and EuroHPC putting 119 million euros on the table, all three blocs are now funding the field in public. But at the patent office, the US is currently pulling away, not falling behind, which is not the story you usually hear.

What I would do with this map

For founders: the lesson from Quobly and Quantum Motion generalizes. Pick the lane where the thicket is thin, then file early and deliberately, because the 55% quarterly growth in neutral atom says thin lanes do not stay thin. And whatever your qubit, put real filings into the error correction layer. That is where the field’s next decade of foundational claims is being written right now.

For investors: make portfolio depth part of the price. A $2 billion valuation on 18 core families is not automatically wrong, but it means the value thesis rests on trade secrets, talent, and speed rather than exclusionary IP, and you should know which one you are buying. And check the optics shelf before concluding a photonic company has no estate.

For acquirers and IP strategists: error correction portfolios are the asymmetric asset. Every modality needs them, they are one tenth of the field today, and their filing curve is the only one tracking to a record this year. Cross-modality correction IP is the closest thing quantum has to a toll booth.

The pattern from June held, and then some. The market prices the loud lanes. The patent map shows you the quiet ones, and this quarter the money finally started reading the map.
