Our Company History
1998 - ipCG Founded
ipCG was founded in 1998 by John Cronin after serving as IBM’s top inventor, during which time he and created and ran the IBM Patent Factory. Originally called Venture Info Capital, the firm focused on connecting investment groups with companies while helping firms of all sizes create and develop IP portfolios.
2000 - Venture Funding and New Focus
Mellon Ventures provided ipCG with its initial funding to help establish the ipCapital Group Methodology, build its team and grow the client base. The focus of the company rapidly turned to solving the many challenges of intangible assets and capitalizing on opportunities to use IP as a business tool. ipCG matured as a business and exited the VC firm in 2008.
2011 - America Invents Act
On September 16, 2011, the Leahy–Smith America Invents Act (AIA) was signed into law. Significant changes were made, including the key change of moving the U.S. patent system from a “first to invent” to a “first inventor to file” system. ipCG began advising companies on shifting their IP strategies to suit the new patent process.
2018 - Artificial Intelligence and IP
The convergence of lower cost computing, the ubiquitous use of the internet, and availability and access to software development skills has made Artificial Intelligence (AI) a viable tool for IP management. ipCG recognized this advancement and created a segment of the business to design, develop, and implement AI solutions for clients. These solutions are aimed to improve efficiency, increase speed, and remove roadblocks within the innovation and invention workflow.
